On 1 October 2019, SEAMEO SPAFA welcomed Mrs. Somlak Charoenpot as its new Centre Director. She succeeds former Centre Director, Dr. M.R. Rujaya Abhakorn.

Mrs. Somlak Charoenpot has a BA in Archaeology from Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, and a MA in Art History with Museum Studies from the University of Denver in Colorado, United States of America. She worked as a curator and was executive director in charge of 44 national museums in Thailand before becoming the Deputy General of the Fine Arts Department (FAD) where she extended her management to the work of the Offices of Architecture, Arts and Crafts, Literature and History, National Museums, the Office of Performing Arts and many regional FAD units.

In the short two and a half months since assuming the role as Director, Mrs. Charoenpot has met with archaeology stakeholders to obtain their suggestions on how SEAMEO SPAFA should move forward in further contributing to archaeology in the region, with plans to have a similar meeting with stakeholders in the arts. Furthermore, she has revamped the building, having already renovated the exhibition hall next to the Centre’s library to be a space where guests can feel welcomed and comfortable. She also looks forward to building bridges and working in partnership with institutions in promoting and preserving the archaeology, arts and cultural heritage of Southeast Asia.

SEAMEO SPAFA looks forward to Mrs. Charoenpot’s vision in leading the SEAMEO SPAFA Centre during her tenure.
