We at SEAMEO SPAFA extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Myanmar in the wake of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on 28 March 2025. This calamity has not only resulted in a tragic loss of life but has also inflicted severe damage on invaluable cultural heritage sites.
Countless cultural heritage monuments across the regions of Sagaing, Mandalay, and Bago—the three worst-hit areas—have been severely affected. These regions hold centuries-old temples, monasteries, and historical sites that form a crucial part of Myanmar’s cultural and historical identity.
As an organization dedicated to the preservation of Southeast Asia’s cultural heritage, SEAMEO SPAFA stands in solidarity with Myanmar during this challenging time. We are committed to supporting efforts aimed at assessing the damage and facilitating the restoration of these irreplaceable cultural treasures. Together, we can work towards safeguarding our shared heritage for future generations.
As part of our commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage, SEAMEO SPAFA has released 4 video resources on Emergency Preparedness & Response to support disaster recovery efforts in Myanmar and beyond. All videos include subtitles in the Myanmar language and are valuable for heritage professionals, responders, and communities across the region.
